Artois and Fromelles Walking tour – Few people would have yet heard of the remarkable discovery of British and Australian bodies in recent months, this tour covers the ground of the fighting at Fromelles and presents an opportunity to visit the new cemetery and final resting place on the day of its opening. In addition visits and walks to the nearby battlefields of 1915 ensure this is a tour not to be missed.
Day 1 - Travel from the UK to our tour base in Tournai.
Day 2 - Walk one Fromelles, on the 94th anniversary of the tragic attack we start behind the lines at Rue Petillon, visit the stunning La Trou Aid Post CWGC before crossing the old front line via VC Corner and the Cobber Memorial, it is planned to walk to the new cemetery to coincide with the opening ceremony. A PM visit to the La Touret Memorial is also planned.
Day 3 - Walk two Neuve Chapelle, the important March 1915 battle of Neuve Chapelle is covered from the Indian Corps Memorial at la Bombe Crossroads to the Bois de Biez and its impressive German Bunker. Studying the action in depth we discover the stories behind the men that fought over this hallowed ground.
Walk three Loos and the Hohenzollern Redoubt, from La Rutoire Farm we follow the advance of 25 September 1915 across to the Lone Tree before ending at St Marys Ads to discover among others the enduring story of John Kipling. The infamous Hohenzollern Redoubt site is visited to end our day.
Day 4 - Walk four Ploegsteert Wood, a walk around the wood in its entirety is undertaken from Strand Cemetery back to Hyde park Corner, this most famous of woods holds many fascinating stories and the various bunkers, cemeteries and memorials that lie within or on its boundaries are visited during our day, an evening in Ypres and the last post ceremony is planned before returning to our hotel in Tournai.
Day 5 - Travel back to the UK.
