The Quickfirer had a duel meaning in the
Great War,
Firstly it referred to the 18 Pdr QF Artillery Weapon, effective
up to 7,600 yards and produced in its thousands during the Great
War, it became the principal weapon for the men of the Royal Field
Artillery firing High Explosive, Shrapnel or Gas Shells.

The second use of the phrase was the nickname
given by troops to the readily available official postcards that
could be deleted to reflect ones sentiments i.e.
I have not heard from you in a while
I am quite well
I am sick
I am wounded
Phrases could be deleted as appropriate
but any additional information was quickly spotted by the official
censor and the card was destroyed. One way around this was to corrupt
the address on the front of the card to spell out the letters Y.P.R.E.S.
or A.R.R.A.S.
